In preparation for Hurricane Dorian, the Town of Indian Shores will open its sand bagging station (including sand, bags, and shovels) at the north end of the Municipal Center parking lot. Please limit your take to 10 bags maximum.
To fill sandbags:
- Fill sandbags one-half full
- Use sand if readily available, otherwise, use local soil/dirt
- Fold top of sandbag down and rest bag on its folded top
To place sandbags:
- Take care in stacking sandbags
- Limit placement to three layers unless a building is used as a backing or sandbags are placed in a pyramid
- Tap each sandbag into place, completing each layer prior to starting the next layer
- Clear a path between buildings for debris flow
- Lay a plastic sheet between the building and the bags to control water flow and prevent water from seeping into sliding glass doors
Sandbags are available through local home improvement stores, sand sold separately.
Important: Disposal of sandbags
Sand and sandbags that have been in contact with floodwaters may be contaminated with sewage or septic waste, animal waste, oil and gasoline residue, lawn chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, or other hazardous chemicals. Caution should be used to avoid direct human contact when handling sand or sandbags. Wear gloves and a dust mask, if there is loose or blowing material. Do not place used sand in or near bodies of water, playgrounds, sandboxes, or other areas of direct human contact.
